Opening Ceremony of CANGO’s China Climate Change Education Project

On November 2, 2012, the Opening Ceremony of CANGO’s China Climate Change Education Project was held in Beijing. This project is implemented by the China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO), the sponsor is the German Church Development Service (EED), and the support organization is Climate Change Department of National Development and Reform Commission(NDRC). The period of this project will be three years, from September 2012 to August 2015. Project locations are the 5 provinces Guangdong, Liaoning, Hubei, Shaanxi, Yunnan and the 10 cities Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Nanchang, Guiyang, Baoding (City). Trainings on climate change education will be provided to thousands of teachers and hundreds of schools will implement climate change activities in the above mentioned regions.
The project has five specific characteristics:
1. China-specific innovative teaching materials for Chinese middle schools will be developed;
2. Networks between schools will be established through an interactive climate change internet platform;
3. The project will initiate a national climate change school competition and host a national competition award ceremony and facilitate cooperation with the private sector to promote schools’ proposal into real action;
4. Policy recommendations on how to better integrate climate change issues into official national teaching curricula for secondary schools will be developed;
5. Emphasis is placed on gender balance and interaction between schools in city and rural areas.
The opening ceremony attracted high attention from different stakeholders including central government. More than 60 participants from government departments, academic institutes, schools, corporations, international and domestic NGOs and the media joined the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony was moderated by Mr. Zhao Daxing, Deputy Executive Director of CANGO. Firstly, Mr. Huang Haoming, Executive Director of CANGO, gave a welcome speech to introduce CANGO and some of CANGO’s climate change projects. He expressed the hope that the project can be implemented smoothly through the support from government, academics, international and domestic NGOs, and media. Ms. Wang Xinagyi, Project Manager of CANGO and the China Climate Change Education Project, gave a presentation to introduce the objectives, activities and work plan of the project.
Mr. Sun Zhen, Deputy Director of Climate Change Department of NDRC, and Mr. Wang Xuechen, Deputy Director of Center of Meteorology Science Dissemination of China Meteorological Administration, gave speeches representing governmental departments. They expressed their congratulations and support for the project and also provided valuable suggestions for the project implementation. The following different stakeholders also gave speeches to express their expectations and suggestions, including Ms. Jiang Nanqing, China Program Manager of UNEP, Ms. Zhang Lingge, Cool China Program Manager of Environmental Defense Fund, Professor ZhengBaowei, Director of Research Center of Journalism and Social Development, Ms. Li Li, Director of Envirofriends Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, and Ms. Luo Hongli, teacher representative from Xiangyang 38 Middle School.
In addition to the speeches, all participants also wrote their expectations on the backdrop of the opening ceremony. Finally, Mr. Huang Haoming, Executive Director of CANGO distributed the certificate of appointment to the project Advisory Committee members.
After the opening ceremony, as the first step the work to develop China-specific teaching materials will start. We have moved the first step and wish a brilliant tomorrow for China Climate Change Education.
